Staycation: Enjoy the Every-day

Preface: A couple of years ago I planned a staycation over the Christmas holiday and did nothing more than suffer with the flu. There was a path worn between bed and sofa. No visits to friends, no writing (it was intended to be an at-home writing retreat), no delicious dinners. Prior to that, I started taking one day off per quarter to do things like get the oil changed and knock out a couple of doctor appointments without having to scramble around and quickly get back to work. Somewhere along the way (perhaps in the midst of the cancer diagnosis and treatment), I forgot about my

Personal stylist helps heal after loss

A little more than a year ago, my good friend Debra lost her husband suddenly and tragically. She lost her husband, Ron–her best friend of 25 years. It’s difficult to imagine what you would do, how you would cope, in the face of this unimaginable heartbreak. I watched my friend grieve, and there was little I could do. Cards, phone calls, and sitting at her kitchen table felt feeble. Inadequate. Yet, I watched Debra find strength she didn’t know existed. She put one foot in front of the other month after month, day after day, and sometimes just minute after

Vintage-Look Wall Mounted Coat Rack…for Scarves!

That’s right, a coat rack for scarves. I’ve been wanting something in the entry to catch my scarves, and maybe even my pocketbook, for at least a year. I would find something that was the right price but not the look I wanted, or cute as could be but a couple hundred dollars. For a piece of wood and some hooks! So, as you can imagine, I took matters into my own hands. Sort of. I gleaned this little doo-dad from the haphazard shelves of At Home for less than $15. It was the wrong color, of course, but paint was sent to earth so

Gourmet Meals in a Box: Blue Apron Week 2

My second week of Blue Apron has come to a close. Although some of the recipes were more time-intensive than I would prefer and, in my opinion, not quite as yummy as the other service I sampled (although that is a matter of personal taste), I had some pretty good dinners from my own kitchen without ever having to step foot in the grocery store. Success! Without further ado, here’s how the last week played out. Crispy Fish Tacos with English Pea Guacamole & Pea Tip Salad I love fish tacos, and I’ll be the first to admit I’m a little fussy about

Gourmet Meals in a Box: Blue Apron, Week 1

Last week I received my first shipment from Blue Apron, another of the ingredients-and-recipes-delivered-to-your-home services. It was easy to sign up and choose which delivery day worked best for me, and I can start/stop deliveries at any time–there is no contract or commitment. The box was delivered a day earlier than scheduled, and luckily, this turned out fine. However, if I had been travelling (like the week before) and not been home, all of that food could have spoiled. But I was home, and the spoils were mine! In the box were the ingredients to prepare three recipes, each recipe providing two servings (dinner for two). I should
