The debate over aluminum being connected to Alzheimer’s disease and to breast cancer continues. Studies have suggested both, and both have been discredited. Regardless, many have kicked aluminum to the curb, just in case. I did, and now I’ve done some aluminum free deodorant comparisons!
I don’t want to be that TMI girl, but here we are talking about deodorant, so what do you think is going to happen? As a breast cancer survivor and having a family history of dementia, I want to err on the side of caution so I’ve done some aluminum free deodorant comparisons. Plus, I have the most active sweat glands I’ve ever met.
I tried just about every deodorant and antiperspirant on the market. For the record, deodorants typically do not have aluminum anyway; antiperspirants have aluminum–that is what blocks your pores from sweating. It doesn’t sound healthy to me. Anywho, neither deodorant nor antiperspirant lived up to their claims in my sweat domain. Some worked a little, but the sweating and the odor just kept on. During my recovery after breast lumpectomy when I was not allowed to use any product in my pits, I found that nothing at all was about as effective as the products I had used up to that point. Seriously.
When the coast was clear, I did go back to using, but only aluminum free. Again, mild success with odor control, but it was something.
Seven years later and now working from home in near-isolation due to the covid pandemic, I figured it was the perfect time to trial some new-to-me deodorants. If nobody is getting within six feet of me, the sky is my stinky limit! Here’s how the four aluminum free deodorant comparisons rank:
1 – BEST IN SHOW
NATIVE. This paraben free, aluminum free and cruelty free deodorant is available online and comes in a multitude of fragrances (I tried the coconut & vanilla). This deodorant gives me the best odor control and lasts pretty much all day. Now, those 756 days in the high 90s, nothing worked then, but again, best time ever for that six feet of separation from Kevin Bacon. The only drawback is that it’s a tad thick and is white. Not only does it leave white marks on my clothes, but it balls up and my pits look like I’ve been spit-balled during a hold-up. If you can live with that, it’s great!
2 – SUPER CLOSE SECOND
ARM & HAMMER ESSENTIALS. Free of aluminum, parabens, and phthalates, this was my go-to for quite a while. It goes on clear, so no white staining or balling in the pits. But, it goes on very wet so there is a drying time before getting dressed or you’ll look like you’re sweating through your shirt which is exactly what you’re trying to avoid. The Arm & Hammer gives me a fair amount of odor control, but not quite as good as Native and it doesn’t last as long throughout the day. So you can have good odor control & white balls, or okay odor control and no balls. Your choice.
3 – I REALLY WANTED TO LOVE THIS ONE
LOVE BEAUTY AND PLANET. The name makes me want to love it! The label claims 24HR odor protection, argan oil & lavender, relaxing deodorant with plant based deodorizers. It sounds like the fairy tale of deodorants! But while it smells so nice in the package, it didn’t have much staying power in the sweat zone. It dissipated quickly and left me definitely not smelling like lavender for most of the day.
4 – GAVE ME A FUNGAL INFECTION IN MY PITS!
SPIT & POLISH NATURAL. I picked up this deodorant at the Duluth Trading Company, and in all fairness it is a mens deodorant. So maybe if I had a large swath of pit hair to protect me from it, I wouldn’t have developed the infection. The scent Field Shower claims “powerful odor-busting blend” and says to follow directions carefully, your body may take a week or more to detox and adjust, and to not sweat the small stuff. Easy for them to say. They didn’t have fire-ant itchy pits with a thick waxy brine blocking any air, sweat or otherwise from entering or leaving the premises. This was not a good situation folks, and I’m thankful that it only took a few days to clear up once I stopped use. #neverforget
So there you have it, my current pick is NATIVE even though it leaves a white chalky residue. I’m open to trying new deodorants, so if you have one that you love, let me know and perhaps I can do another trial.
Remember, take time to smell the roses, just don’t smell!
