You know how some folks talk about “mental health” days? They call off work, stay home, lounge about in their jammies and watch tv. At least that’s what I imagine they do. WELL, I scheduled a day off a few months ago to knock out some errands and just have a Me day. Score! It’s an entirely different world out there…you know, between 9 and 5 on a week day. I had my oil changed, had lunch, and enjoyed a little shopping. It was a little slice of sanity and I decided to treat myself to it at least quarterly. On my Me day last week I had my oil changed, picked up some things at Target, did some returns, went to the jeweler, picked up P’s medication at the vet, and got my hair cut. Normally, this would have been at least three days of rushing around on lunch breaks, leaving early, or coming in late to work. All of which cause me to have imaginary ulcers.
|Target on a Friday morning. Delightfully eerie!|
The word that comes to mind during these Me days is civilization. Which is, according to Webster’s, “an advanced state of human society.” On a Friday morning Target is a place of near tranquility and a 15 minute oil change takes 15 minutes. I don’t have that pit in my stomach because I have an hour for lunch and my oil change took 40 minutes and it’s 15 minutes of traffic each way and now I’m late getting back to work and I haven’t even eaten yet. There are no harried 9 to 5ers (just like myself) to fight for the last jar of Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter because Harris Teeter is doing super doubles AND it’s on sale which means you get it for like a dollar…IF you get there before the droves have plucked the shelves clean. Not likely at 6pm.
The icing on the cake is this – because the errands were done in peace on Friday, the weekend is ours to enjoy doing whatever we please. Woohoo! Of course that would be some project or another, that’s what I do. I start projects. Right now we’re painting the kitchen cabinets. What. A. Job. We started on Thanksgiving day thinking we could finish in our four days off. Here we are on December 9th and we are just about half way done. Hmph. Guess I was a little off again.
Needless to say, we’re looking forward to putting this project behind us and getting back to a finished kitchen. I’ll post some before and afters when it’s all done…and before we move on to the next big thing!
